COMMUNITY BUILDING AND PARTNERSHIPS

Vision for the Future: We become a church that advocates for Social Justice

Following Jesus’ example, we will advocate for Social Justice where everyone shares a common humanity, has enough, is cared for and included. This Justice values diversity, challenges injustice, and extends beyond ideas of personal responsibility and equal opportunity.

STEP into awareness and understanding of our own perspectives, shortcomings, prejudices and those of others. Dislodge ourselves from our comfort zone.

STEP together to find ways to talk about social justice issues from a Methodist theological perspective.

JUMP out into the community in places and ways that grow from our STEPs of awareness and dialogue. Build a culture and infrastructure that fosters the creation of and supports the effectiveness of Social Justice initiatives.

LEAP into deeper and broader partnerships and actions that fundamentally change Social Justice in our community.

“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8

“Indeed nothing can be more sure than that true Christianity cannot exist without both the inward experience and outward practice of justice, mercy, and truth” John Wesley, founder of Methodism

EDUCATION

Vision for the Future: Improve Educational Outcomes in our community, especially for Sedgefield Elementary School students

STEP to increase and expand CHAMP program. Support teachers, extend CHAMP to middle and high school, add additional staff.

JUMP to offer scholarships for higher education and internships; partner with other churches or groups.

LEAP to create a community center.

“Raise up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it”  Proverbs 22:6

RADICAL HOSPITALITY

Vision for the Future: All people at MPUMC joyfully accept and welcome others they don’t know, and make conversation that is inclusive; avoiding words that might sound excluding or arrogant, even if well intentioned.

STEP to improve communication tools and training for ushers and greeters.

STEP to serve communion celebration in places of pain in the community during Holy Week.

JUMP to create a dedicated, staffed Welcome Center.

JUMP to be in relationship with those we serve versus sending help. Wherever our money goes, our hands and feet will go.

LEAP into advocacy that seeks to provide all the blessings the church has to offer to all individuals.

“Extend hospitality to strangers” Romans 12:13

SHELTER

Vision for the Future: Reduce homelessness in Charlotte. Provide pathways and support for the transition out of homelessness while removing the barriers that separate us.

STEP to leverage worldwide mission experiences to drive local mission impact

STEP to deal faithfully with those who show up on our doorstep seeking shelter

JUMP to expand HOPE team efforts to support transition out of homelessness

JUMP into an effort to develop and fund Elizabeth House II

LEAP to building a transitional housing neighborhood where church members will also reside.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in” Matthew 25:35

GROW IN FAITH

Vison for the Future: All members will grow in faith working towards a familiarity with the Bible and a foundation in Christian theology

JUMP to promote Intergenerational focus. Become more intentional about creating and sustaining inter-generational relationships. Live into the promises made at baptism.

LEAP: Everyone Gives Three – Worship Learn Serve – Become a congregation where each person/family regularly attends worship, actively participates in Sunday School/ small group, and faithfully maintains a service commitment

LEAP to create a state of the art facility to house and children’s programs promoting faith formation.

“We cherish the hope that your faith may continue to grow and enlarge our sphere of action until it overflows” 2 Corinthians 10:15
